Kamau Kenyatta

Kamau Kenyatta is a Grammy Award-winning producer, arranger, composer, educator, and pianist whose work has elevated jazz on both a national and local scale. A longtime professor at UC San Diego, Kenyatta has mentored generations of musicians while maintaining an active professional career. He is perhaps best known for his collaborations with vocalist Gregory Porter, including producing Porter’s Grammy-winning album Liquid Spirit and the critically acclaimed Take Me to the Alley.

Kenyatta’s
talents span far beyond the studio. His sophisticated and emotionally resonant arrangements have enriched projects in film, television, and dance. In San Diego, he is widely regarded as a cultural pillar in the jazz community — not only for his own performances, but for his dedication to nurturing young artists and fostering inclusive artistic spaces.

His work bridges the academic and the intuitive, the traditional and the contemporary, reflecting a deep love for the music’s past and a visionary’s sense of its future. Kamau Kenyatta’s induction into the San Diego Music Hall of Fame honors a lifetime of sonic innovation, mentorship, and contribution to the soul of the city.
