2019’s Hall of Fame class recognizes six gifted talents, who generously represented San Diego, both locally and around the world. Renowned bues singer Candye Kane played more that 250 days a year across the globe before her death in 2016. Saxophonist Charles McPherson is a jazz legend with an incredible body of work, including appearances on a dozen Charles Mingus records. Walt Richards is a bluegrass icon in San Diego, whose group, Trails and Rails, brings new life to songs from the last 200 years. Bill Caballero is a trumpeter, who has contributed mightily to local music through teaching and his ongoing historic weekly Latin Jam, Robin Henkel has been electrifying San Diego audiences with his fun-loving approach to music and blues since the 1960’s. Eve Selis has inspired generations of San Diegans with her music and her powerful personal journey.
“Our intention is to be inclusive and to honor people who have given a large part of themselves to making music in San Diego, regardless of how many records they may or may not have sold,” said SD Music Hall of Fame founder Jefferson Jay. “There is a incredible history of great music in San Diego, and we are focused on sharing this history and ultimately, raising awareness and opportunities for music and musicians in this place we all love calling home.”
Inductees scheduled to perform include Henkel, Selis, and Richards’ Trails and Rails. 2018 Hall of Fame inductees Sue Palmer and Mark Goffeney will perform, as will Angelo Pizarro, Gato Papacitos, and The David Sullivan Jazz Group, featuring students from San Diego State University. Jay promises a captivating night of entertainment and local music history, in which attendees will get to know the inductees and their key contributions. A portion of proceeds will be donated to The Synergy Arts Foundation for work on Jay’s “first series starring a full cast with special needs,” The Hunt for The Holiday Spirit. There will be beverages and pizza available, and a silent auction.
