Tomcat Courtney
Tomcat Courtney, (1929 – 2021) born in Marlin, Texas, is a legend of American blues. Growing up amidst the cotton fields of Downsville, Texas, some of Tomcat Courtney’s earliest memories were sitting in the window of his father’s juke joint listening to greats like Blind Willie Johnson and Lightnin’ Hopkins. These early encounters with country soul and boogie-woogie set the stage for Tomcat’s signature style and ignited his lifelong passion for playing music.
After performing across Texas and Arizona, Tomcat found his musical niche in California, moving first to Los Angeles before finding his home in San Diego. Around 1970, he became a fixture at Peoples (which later became Texas Teahouse) and packed the Ocean Beach venue for three decades.
Songs rich with personal experience and reflections of a bygone era earned Tomcat fans locally and globally. The bluesman received international acclaim for his album “Downsville Blues,” which features nine original tracks, and toured Europe. Tomcat Courtney embodies the essence of a blues elder, with stories that span decades of music history and playing that helped define music history.
